China can be visited throughout the year, but the right season depends on where you want to go and what kind of journey you enjoy. The country stretches across several climate zones, so conditions in Beijing, Shanghai, Guilin and Chengdu can be very different at the same time.
For many first-time visitors, spring and autumn offer the most comfortable balance of weather, scenery and outdoor sightseeing.
The short answer
April to May and September to October are generally the best periods for a classic journey through Beijing, Xi’an and Shanghai.
Choose spring for fresh landscapes and mild temperatures, or autumn for clearer skies, comfortable walking weather and seasonal colour.
Summer works well for families tied to school holidays, while winter can reward flexible travellers with quieter attractions and a different side of China.
Spring: March to May
Spring brings warmer days, flowering parks and greener countryside. It is a particularly attractive season for city walks, gardens and journeys combining northern and southern China.
Beijing can still feel cool and windy in March, while Shanghai and southern China are usually warmer and more humid. Light rain is possible, so a compact umbrella and a waterproof outer layer are useful.
April and the first part of May are excellent for first-time routes covering Beijing, Xi’an and Shanghai. Guilin and Yangshuo become increasingly lush, although rainfall also becomes more frequent.
Spring is best for:
- First-time visitors
- Cultural sightseeing
- Gardens and seasonal landscapes
- Comfortable city walking
- Photography in softer light
Summer: June to August
Summer is hot across much of China, with higher humidity and more rainfall in many eastern and southern destinations. Beijing, Xi’an and Shanghai can all experience very warm days.
This season still works well when the itinerary is paced carefully. Early sightseeing, air-conditioned transfers, midday breaks and flexible indoor activities make a significant difference.
Mountain areas and parts of southwest China can provide cooler alternatives. Summer is also practical for families travelling during school holidays.
Summer is best for:
- Family holidays
- Travellers limited by school calendars
- Mountain and countryside journeys
- Longer daylight hours
- A slower, more flexible pace
Pack breathable clothing, sun protection and a light waterproof layer. Hotels with convenient locations become especially valuable when temperatures rise.
Autumn: September to November
Autumn is one of the most rewarding seasons for travelling in China. Temperatures become more comfortable, skies are often clearer in northern China and walking-based itineraries feel easier.
September and October are especially suitable for Beijing, Xi’an and Shanghai. Later in autumn, northern destinations become cooler while many southern regions remain pleasant.
Autumn is best for:
- Classic first-time journeys
- Great Wall walks
- Outdoor sightseeing
- Landscape photography
- Travellers who prefer milder weather
The National Day holiday period in early October is one of China’s busiest travel times. If your dates overlap with a major public holiday, reserve transport and accommodation well in advance or ask us to adjust the route.
Winter: December to February
Winter reveals a quieter and more atmospheric side of China. Beijing and Xi’an are cold and generally dry, while Shanghai often feels cool and damp. Southern destinations such as Guilin and Chengdu are milder but can still be chilly.
Visitor numbers are often lower outside major holiday periods, making winter appealing to travellers who value quieter museums, historic sites and city experiences.
Winter is best for:
- Fewer crowds
- Cultural and food-focused journeys
- Winter scenery
- Travellers comfortable with cold weather
- More time inside museums and historic buildings
Chinese New Year is a fascinating time to experience seasonal traditions, but it is also an exceptionally busy domestic travel period. Dates change each year, so transportation and opening arrangements need careful planning.
Choosing the best time for your journey
For Beijing, Xi’an and Shanghai, consider April, May, September or October.
For Guilin, Yangshuo and the Longji Rice Terraces, spring offers misty green landscapes while autumn can bring clearer conditions and seasonal colour.
For Chengdu and family travel, spring and autumn provide comfortable sightseeing weather, although the city can be visited throughout the year.
For the Great Wall, spring and autumn usually offer better walking conditions than the hottest weeks of summer or the coldest part of winter.
